3 arrested in East Charlotte murder



MEDIC intervened on the scene and transported the victim to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina – One person was killed in a shootout in east Charlotte on Friday night, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department reports.

Police said the incident began at around 5:21 p.m., when officers responded to the 5300 block of Firelight Lane after 911 received reports of a shooting at the apartment complex and several people fleeing the scene. Police said on arrival they established a perimeter and attempted to follow the suspects with the help of a K-9 CMPD unit. The suspects have not been located.

About 3 minutes later, officers responded to reports of a shooting near the 7008 block of Albemarle Road. Upon arrival, officers located an adult male with apparently gunshot wounds in the parking lot of the Valero convenience store.

MEDIC intervened on the scene and transported the victim to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police identified the victim as 20-year-old Zion Garcia. His family have been notified of his death.

While at the scene, officers learned that the shooting took place in the 5300 block of Firelight Lane. After the shooting, a third party transported the victim to the Albemarle Road site.

On Sunday, CMPD announced that three people had been arrested and charged in connection with the murder: Nyla Burnett, 18, Jalen Meggett, 21, and Jahmel Williams, 27.

Each suspect was interviewed by homicide detectives and transferred to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office. All three face charges of murder, theft with a dangerous weapon and conspiracy to commit theft with a dangerous weapon.
